There’s an age old adage that goes, “Garbage in, garbage out,” , Unfortunately that saying is completely false but it relates perfectly to today’s topic: your environment. The truth is, “Garbage in, garbage stays.”
Whether the negative or positive “vibes” come from your office, significant other, or team in general, your environment can shape you and alter your production. If you’re around a lot of “Debbie Downers” (as my wife likes to call them), this negativity will drag you down and can be toxic to your mindset.
Your mind processes thousands of messages a day. So before you go to bed experts advise that you read something inspirational or write down &/or tell yourself positive affirmations. What are you reading or writing about yourself just before you go to bed that’s positive? By doing this, you’re setting yourself up for a good night’s sleep and highlighting positive thoughts versus negative thoughts.
In real estate, it’s all about location, location, location. Maybe your desk, office, or who you’re near in your office affects your mindset. The location of your smartphone can affect your mindset, too—do you place it top-side up so you can see whenever it flashes or do you put it away and turn your ringer off so you’re not distracted? These are things that can affect your mindset, environment, and activity levels.
Your environment can shape you and alter your production.
Speaking of productivity, I got to see Amy Blankson, author of the book “The Future of Happiness,” speak at a KW Luxury Conference. She talked about people having FOMO, or “fear of missing out.” You have to get to a place where you can work on your business and be productive, but also be positive.
The covers Time Magazine used in 1974 are the same covers they could use in 2020: the war on terror, Middle East violence, gas prices, the housing bubble, the economy, etc. Turn off the constant negative news and surround yourself with positive people. As Zig Ziglar once said, “If you hang out with nine dead-broke people, you’re bound to be the tenth.” I tell agents all the time that if they hang out with nine top producers, they’re bound to be the tenth.
